 "1 Year Warranty - Absolutely Amazing" 2010-02-04
By E. Borgese
I purchased a Sony PSP for my husband off ebay and went with the 1 year Square Trade Warranty. It broke the first month we had it and Square Trade Warranty fixed it for us. Then 1 month before the warranty expired, it completely froze and stopped working. Square Trade Warranty refunded us our money, which I used to purchase another one! The warranty was over $50 less than through Best Buy, and they were easy to work with, had great customer service, and very reliable. I would recommend Square Trade Warranty to anyone, and we'll use them for any future purchases.

I purchased this warranty for a set of car speakers off of Ebay. As soon as I started having issues with them I contacted Squaretrade. We went through the process, two days later I had the full purchase amount refunded to my Paypal account. No long wait to get a hold of someone over the phone, no issues whatsoever. Best warranty service out there!

I bought a refurbished PSP for my grandson for Christmas. I bought a warranty for it from "Square Trade". After just a few days one of the buttons stopped working. We contacted Square Trade and they sent us a shipping label. Within a few days, they examined the PSP, agreed that it was malfunctioning and promptly refunded our entire purchase price. I would definitely do business with them again !!! John in Pennsylvania

I bought the full warranty for my Xbox 360, which covered accidental drops and spills also. Water was spilled accidentally on my 360 and ruined it. Squaretrade sent me a prepaid return label and validated the claim and issued the refund. They are awesome, great customer service and great prices on their warranties. They are much better and cheaper than in-store warranties like Best Buy and Wal Mart. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

"Square Trade is a great idea." 2010-01-19
By Rachel D. Fredette (Merrimack, NH, US)
Bought a refurbished Xbox online and I got the notice from Square Trade to add a Warranty for a nice price. Figuring that Xbox's are not all that reliable with their Red Ring of Death I decided to try it out. Well 3 month's later we got the E74 code, I contacted Square Trade they sent a prepaid label, and within a week from sending it to them I was refunded my money for the purchase. I will use Square Trade again when I purchase the next Xbox which won't be a refurbished one, just in case I get another wonderful Red Ring of Death.

Extended warranties are great products-- for the companies providing the warranties, but not for you.

Put simply, companies do not deliberately go into business to pay more than they collect ;-)

The warranty providers know pretty well how much they will pay to cover damage/replacement on all their policies aggregated together. They add a substantial profit margin and divide by the number of policies to get the price they charge you.

Their business model is like a casino running a clean game-- the bet is still a bad deal for you even when the company is smart enough to pay you promptly with a smile (just as it's shortsighted for a big casino to cheat).

In short, the expected return on your investment on an extended warranty is almost always negative. You can only expect to win if you know you are a harsh user who is -much- more likely to break your item. Even then, it only works if enough other ordinary users continue to buy the warranties.

-----

This argument does not imply that you should never buy insurance. If you lose your home, for example, the actual cost impact you feel is likely to be much larger than the dollar cost of rebuilding it because you will not be able to raise the money on your own after a disaster. This allows the insurance company to take in more than it pays out, making a profit, while still providing you a useful service.

It works because the premium you pay is less than your expected cost of a disaster, even though the premium will be more than your expected dollar receipts from claims.

A good touchstone is that you should not choose to insure unless a worst-case loss would be financially crippling.

"Great source for a warranty!" 2009-12-31

Xbox 360 Elite purchased new for our son lasted one year before ROD killed it. Immediately filed claim with Square Trade, and got prompt response and satisfaction. They even paid for the shipping of the unit for death confirmation! They are my source for warranties; now have them for washer, drier, wii, and new xbox. Too bad they only cover exercise equipment through Amazon, or I'd have bought more.

I bought a refurbished Xbox 360 with a 90 day limited warranty from the company that sold it to me and received an offer by email for the Square Trade warranty for the device for a very reasonable amount. I normally don't opt for extended warranties on things I purchase but I had heard that there have been some issues with older Xbox 360 units so I thought it might be a worthwhile investment. Turns out I was right, after about a year of using my game console without issue I turned on the unit and it had the dreaded red ring of death. Long story short, they reimbursed my Paypal account for the entire amount of purchase and even sent me a prepaid shipping label. I highly recommend Square Trade, they are aces!!!

 "Comparison with N.E.W. warranty" 2009-11-11
By Ruth Morgan (California)
The product I bought (Panasonic microwave) led to an offer of both the SquareTrade warranty and N.E.W. warranty. 2-Year Replacement Plan for Electronics Products $100 to $124.99 I bought the SquareTrade warranty which did not have a link to its "terms and conditions" on the Amazon site. You can only view the complete description of the contract after you have paid for it (but you can get a full refund of either company's warranty within the first 30 days). The terms and conditions of the N.E.W. warranty are available for view prior to purchase. There are significant differences.

The main differences I can see is that the N.E.W. replacement warranty provides the full replacement cost upon covered breakdown (but you still have to ship or deliver the item to the N.E.W. facility at your own cost -- That's in the fine print.)

The SquareTrade warranty allows it to give you a "similar" refurbished replacement item, repair it (with non-original parts), or pay "up to the replacement cost" of the item. If ST decides to pay the replacement cost, it will deduct the cost of any prior repairs, so you may not have enough to actually replace the item if it breaks down more than once. ST's replacement item will not be covered by the warranty; ST's coverage stops once it has provided services up to the purchase price of the item. You can't get coverage at that point and if the replacement breaks down, you're out of luck. To the good, ST does provide round-trip free shipping for repairs (and guarantees repairs within 5 days). But if ST decides the problem was not covered under the warranty, the shipping is not free.

Under the ST warranty, if your item is large enough to qualify for in-house service, it might be a better deal. It seems more likely (imho) that your item will actually be repaired rather than replaced with an unwarrantable refurbished item if a repair person schedules a visit and comes to your house. Again, though, the repair parts don't have to be original manufacturer's parts and coverage stops once the cost of the repairs equals the purchase price.

Another major difference is the extent of coverage. After the expiration of coverage under the manufacturer's warranty, N.E.W.'s warranty expressly covers normal wear and tear and damage caused by the environment. SquareTrade covers "normal use and operation of the product when used in accordance with the manufacturer's specifications and owner's manual" (long list of exclusions and caveats following such as exposure to weather, dust, rust, insects, cracked or damaged monitors or display screens, liquids, etc.) If it's offered, you can buy additional Accidental Damage from Handling (ADH) warranty coverage for which there is a $50 deductible. The description of ST's ADH coverage excludes negligence and normal wear and tear (along with a list of other exclusions). It's not clear what's left. ADH coverage was not offered with my item.

While N.E.W. offers a two-year warranty and SquareTrade a three-

year warranty, that difference appears to be one of semantics. N.E.W. says its warranty begins after the manufacturer warranty ends, whenever that may be. For my item, it's one year, so N.E.W. would cover years two and three. SquareTrade coverage begins on the date of purchase but excludes any claim during the period covered by the manufacturer's warranty so realistically, it's only good the last two years of the three-year period.

If my Panasonic microwave is eligible for in-home repair, SquareTrade may be a good deal. I don't expect to drop it or leave it in the rain and would prefer not to pay to ship it to a facility (as I would have to do to get the replacement cost from N.E.W.) But if the cost of a single in-home repair is going to eat up the entire value of my warranty (or even half), I will check into the shipping cost and may opt for N.E.W. instead.

Squaretrade does beat all retailers prices on warranties. And there service os above average. Few downsides if you get their warranty for gaming, they make you pay for repairs up front then reimburse you. And they slow with contact I always had to email them to get them to tell me where I was at in the claim process.

I buy a lot of electronic 'toys' and invest in Square Trade warranties for just about all of them because of the good experiences I have had with them. I have fortunately only had to make three claims in the last couple of years, one just a couple of weeks ago. All were handled quickly and I received their payments very, very promptly. It was a simple, hassle free experience and they did not

While there are a many warranty companies out there that don't pay their claims or try to find ways to wriggle out of paying their claims, Square Trade absolutely, positively does. Their warranty plans are very competitively priced and they deliver what they promise.

 "Process is unclear" 2009-12-05
By J. Fried (San Mateo, CA USA)
After purchasing 3yr coverage for my Kindle, i received notification that i had to supply a receipt for the Kindle. I sent my Amazon receipts, and in return they sent me an email that read, "Thanks for sending us your receipt! We will validate its contents when a claim is being processed for this item. Just to be safe, please save your receipt." So, it appears that they won't validate my receipt until a claim is processed. This means that the moment i send in a claim, they could then tell me that my receipt wasn't acceptable and invalidate the warranty. Not Good. I will call them next week, however, since the only thing i have in writing is really not a statement of acceptance from them and a verbal discussion with an agent simply will not suffice since it has no legal strength. Hence the rating of 1.

 "SquareTrade Warranty Program" 2010-01-27
By S. Brown (Debary, FL USA)
I have purchased all types of products and sometimes I would like a longer warranty. For example I purchased a fairly expensive razor and I went looking on Amazon to see if they had an extended warranty. After the regular warranty is up the extended warranty will kick in. That is only partly true since many warranties vary as to the level of service. I have used SquareTrade Warranties before with other products and could not find one for the razor. I then looked up SquareTrade on the internet and spoke with someone very personable that told me I could get a SquareTrade Warranty for my razor and I can call anytime 24 hours a day 7 days a week at 1-877-WARRANTY. After I purchase the item I have 90 days to get the warranty. The cost of the warranty varies as to the cost of the product and length of warranty. SquareTrade sent me a link to my email that sent me to Amazon purchasing the warranty I needed. SquareTrade also stated that the buyer can contact them after and they will put all the information in their system and when the warranty is needed the buyer will not need any paperwork. If the product is purchased through Amazon you only need the order number. The only downfall for this service is that SquareTrade does not replace the product if after you call their claims department to fix the item and it cannot be fixed. They will reimburse you if the item is fixed and if not they will reimburse what you paid for the product. I must tell you that I have not had to use the warranty service even though I have many SquareTrade Warranties. I can only tell you what is written and when I called to write this review what SquareTrade told me they do involving claims. I hope this helps a little. Always read the fine print.

I like that you can use their service regardless of where you bought the item you wish to warrant. The latest cell phone that I purchased did not come with an extended warranty plan. My son purchased a used X-Box 1 year ago on E-Bay. We bought a used item solely b/c Square Trade offered a great warranty on the item. Almost 1 year later the unit broke, and Square Trade refunded our purchase price. My son went the same route, went to E-Bay, purchased another refurbished unit that offered a Square Trade warranty. The day I paid, Square Trade sent an e-mail with their warranty offer in it including my "return customer" discount. I had a question about the offer, so I e-mailed customer service and got an instant reply: "We are sorry you received the e-mail offer, we no longer cover E-Bay sold X-Box units, but we offer service from these other websites...." In my opinion, they made the offer, they should back it up. If I had not made an inquiry and just the purchase, what would have happened, they would have taken my money and not serviced my product???? Poor customer service, false advertisement, back your word....

 "Worst Warranty Ever" 2009-08-05
By John Sullivan (kennebunk)
I bought a Squaretrade warranty for my iPhone a year ago. My headphone jack recently stopped working and I filed a claim through them. They sent me a box to ship it out in and I did so. 8 days later, I haven't received my ONLY phone back. A call to Squaretrade finds out that not only has my item been "repaired" by blowing compressed air into the headphone jack (that's it), it still hasn't been shipped out yet and shouldn't be here for another two days. Their 5 day guarantee is an absolute load of crap and they will not reimburse you for anything. GARBAGE COMPANY.

 "Excellent Warranties" 2009-04-11
By F. Lambert (Northern CA, USA)
Squaretrade offers the most affordable and dependable warranties of any company I have seen. Every electronic I purchase has a Squaretrade warranty. Although I have only made two claims since I started with Squaretrade I was pleasantly surprised that my claim was handled within days not weeks like other companies and I received a full refund for my product's purchase price, not some refurbished piece of junk. I would definitely recommend Squaretrade to anyone.

 "Don't leave without it!!" 2009-04-10

I'm now at the point where I purchase a Square Trade Warranty with anything I buy of value. How many times has something broken on you the week AFTER the warranty expired? Getting years of coverage on any expensive product you buy is important. The prices they offer are almost half of what the retail chain's will offer you. Sometimes even covering it for a longer period of time too! I also like how easy they make it to transfer your warranties in case you sell your gadgets. Another great feature is having all your warranties in one location. Makes it much easier to track and find later. Protect your stuff with Square Trade every chance you get.
