 "SquareTrade Warranty Program" 2010-01-27
By S. Brown (Debary, FL USA)
I have purchased all types of products and sometimes I would like a longer warranty. For example I purchased a fairly expensive razor and I went looking on Amazon to see if they had an extended warranty. After the regular warranty is up the extended warranty will kick in. That is only partly true since many warranties vary as to the level of service. I have used SquareTrade Warranties before with other products and could not find one for the razor. I then looked up SquareTrade on the internet and spoke with someone very personable that told me I could get a SquareTrade Warranty for my razor and I can call anytime 24 hours a day 7 days a week at 1-877-WARRANTY. After I purchase the item I have 90 days to get the warranty. The cost of the warranty varies as to the cost of the product and length of warranty. SquareTrade sent me a link to my email that sent me to Amazon purchasing the warranty I needed. SquareTrade also stated that the buyer can contact them after and they will put all the information in their system and when the warranty is needed the buyer will not need any paperwork. If the product is purchased through Amazon you only need the order number. The only downfall for this service is that SquareTrade does not replace the product if after you call their claims department to fix the item and it cannot be fixed. They will reimburse you if the item is fixed and if not they will reimburse what you paid for the product. I must tell you that I have not had to use the warranty service even though I have many SquareTrade Warranties. I can only tell you what is written and when I called to write this review what SquareTrade told me they do involving claims. I hope this helps a little. Always read the fine print.

Extended warranties are great products-- for the companies providing the warranties, but not for you.

Put simply, companies do not deliberately go into business to pay more than they collect ;-)

The warranty providers know pretty well how much they will pay to cover damage/replacement on all their policies aggregated together. They add a substantial profit margin and divide by the number of policies to get the price they charge you.

Their business model is like a casino running a clean game-- the bet is still a bad deal for you even when the company is smart enough to pay you promptly with a smile (just as it's shortsighted for a big casino to cheat).

In short, the expected return on your investment on an extended warranty is almost always negative. You can only expect to win if you know you are a harsh user who is -much- more likely to break your item. Even then, it only works if enough other ordinary users continue to buy the warranties.

-----

This argument does not imply that you should never buy insurance. If you lose your home, for example, the actual cost impact you feel is likely to be much larger than the dollar cost of rebuilding it because you will not be able to raise the money on your own after a disaster. This allows the insurance company to take in more than it pays out, making a profit, while still providing you a useful service.

It works because the premium you pay is less than your expected cost of a disaster, even though the premium will be more than your expected dollar receipts from claims.

A good touchstone is that you should not choose to insure unless a worst-case loss would be financially crippling.
