 "GOOD PICTURES BUT---" 2010-02-03
By Grumpy Gramps (Wisconsin)
Gave this as a Christmas gift to my totally none technically-inclined wife. We both found it very difficult to use with totally non-intuitive controls and an essentially useless instruction manual. While we found the display to be crisp and clear, I found it took me hours to figure out how to down load albums of pictures from my computer ( I have a Mac), only to then find that locating and displaying said albums on the frame was even more difficult. Of course, the manual was totally useless for either operation. Be aware that buttons on the remote are only remotely related to the function claimed (i.e. the "ALBUM" button does not lead to a means to select an album to display, I'm not sure what it does do). Be also aware that a computer is required to actually create and organize albums. All other functionality seems to be similarly poorly thought out and controlled.

In summary, good display but very user non-friendly (my dear wife still can do little more than turn it on and accept whatever it chooses to show).

As with all Sony products, picture quality is great. Also the price is bit steeper than other no name brand products, but you have to pay more for quality. I believe I made the right choice when I purchased this product.

 "Nice Christmas Gift" 2010-01-12

My adult siblings and I wanted this for our parents. While it has some neat features, it's not loaded with stuff that they will never use, such as wifi. It was pretty easy to set up and load with photos, which is good because the instruction manual is a little vague in spots. It accommodates just about every type of camera card, as well as USB flash devices. The plain black frame with the Sony logo looks more like a TV or monitor than a picture frame.

I had high hopes for this picture frame. It looked nice on the box, but once I uploaded my pictures, the quality of the pictures weren't too impressive. The contrast is very bright, and the color is artificially vivid. Reds are too bright and skin color is a mix of all sorts of other colored pixels. I am white, yet in every picture, it looks like I'm sunburned because the red is so overwhelming. Aside from the disappointing picture quality, it cycles through the pictures no problem (although for some reason a good number of my pictures from iphoto won't show up on the picture frame). For the amount of money I paid for it, I would have expected more. There are many other frames to choose from and I personally would not buy this one again. I would buy another Sony (if the picture quality was better) but for some reason, my 4 inch ipod touch has better picture quality and resolution than my big 9 inch picture frame.

This frame is better than most, however, I cannot give it 5 stars because:

- the 15:9 aspect ratio (which is almost 16:9, the widescreen movie format) is no good!!! Most digital pictures are 4:3 or 3:2, therefore you will have significant areas of the screen wasted as black bars all the time!

- the resolution 800x480 is not good enough! The pixels are rather large when you hold the frame in your hands.

- red color is too saturated, and there is no control to adjust it. Skin tones come out unnatural.

- the black frame looks disproportionally wide - this just looks ugly.

Looking at DPF-D92 and DPF-D80 side by side, the D80 looks way better.
