I purchased this frame exclusively for the ability to view photos online using Picasa. I purchased the wifi dongle (sold separately) and the setup was straight forward enough connecting to my wifi network.



I have experience with a samsung frame that works much better than this functionality. I do not recommend this frame for two reasons if you are looking primarily for a wireless frame:



1) photos on picasa DO NOT UPDATE until you do a manual disconnect/reconnect to the picasa network or power cycle the frame. Connecting to picasa takes several minutes (why?) and is a pain to wait each time you want to see updated pictures from the net. I think it takes so long because it has to (re-)download the entire picasa album each time it connects (stupid!)



2) I cannot figure out how to make the scheduled power on/off. I believe that it doesn't really work.



The samsung wireless frame I bought for the other grandparents, while very buggy, does RSS photo feeds near flawlessly. I guess you get what you pay for.



I have talked negatively about the frame because I primarily wanted a wifi photo frame. I think the frame works very well for basic photo (and video!) viewing from a memory card.

 "HIGH QUALITY" 2010-01-16

I purchased this to get the free super saver shipping so it worked out to cost me about $1.50 instead of paying for shipping. However, estimated delivery was around 15 days? Doh! ;-)



Anyway, I wanted a card that was at least a class 4 to record HD video with my pansonic point and shoot camera. I've seen a lot of people argue about what the class of the card means and it's actual transfer rates so I thought I'd be safe getting one thats in the middle of the road. There are 4 classes, starting with 2 and ending at 6. Supposedly getting a class 6 doesn't always mean that it will perform better than say a class 2. The old way of classing these cards was to use the X factor. A 133X card would transfer about 20megs a second and so on but I've seen a 4gb usb stick that was 150x that transfered over 40megs a second. Even that way of classing the cards failed to hold up to the reality of benchmarks. So, if I'm going to write a review I may as well make it worth reading by doing some psudo-scientific tests and compare it to an older Crucial 4gb Class 6 card I purchased about 5 months ago. Technically the Crucial with it's mighty class 6 rating should blow the HP out of the water. We'll see.



To do the test, I installed the latest Sisoftware Sandra 2010 benchmarking software and gave these card the once over. Sandra is considered by many to be one of the best benchmarking software programs around! I conducted the test on my brand new Asus 1000HE Netbook which has a really nice SDHC card reader built in and running windows 7 premium. This is the true definition of a "real world test".



Sisandra comes with a large catalog of SDHC cards they tested themselves and this allows you to compare the results showing the best ones all the way down to the poorest performer. You can even compare your SDHC card to a sata hard drive or a 2gb usb flash drive. Whatever floats your boat. The test starts by transfering 512 bites and working it's way up to 512megs and it examines the speed at which it handles the constant stream of data going in and coming out.



My older Crucial 4GB Class 6 shows 2408 ops/minute with an endurance factor of 85.1%. This HP class 4 shows 2261 ops/min with an endurance of 95.3%. They tell me that higher numbers are better. As you can see, there is very little diffference between the Crucial and the HP except I paid about $25 for the Crucial. Both these cards are perfectly fine for ordinary applications and have enough bandwidth to handle at least 720p HD video from your digital point and shoot camera. Most digital cameras limit the recording to 15 minutes anyway, so if all you want to do is capture video with your point and shoot, then you should have good results with this card. Overall, both my cards are ranked #3 in the world of storage devices. If you plan on capturing 1080p HD video you'll probably want to invest more money in better performing cards. Othewise you might get dropped frames as you push the limits of these slower cards. That would create a stuttering effect in your video that you would notice as the camera pans back and forth. You do pretty much get what you pay for here but sometimes you pay double for something that doesn't deliver much more. The old saying comes to mind. "Caveat Emptor - Buyer beware!"



The fastest SD card was the 1GB Peak Xtreme which ran about 8000 ops/min. The fastest SDHC was a Toshiba 16GB which benchmarked at 4950 ops/min. Thats the kind of card you'll want for 1080p video because not only does it handle the bandwidth but it has a lot of capacity to capture those huge 1080p movie files. It won't take you long to fill up 16gb.



To give you a sense of perspective, the 80gb apple ipod transfers at 4422 ops/min. The Viking 1gb compact flash card can transfer at a whopping speed of 232 ops/min. and yes, Viking is still in business and even sell a 64meg SD card here on amazon. Must be useful for some kind of old technology like ancient gaming systems.

I've come across many negative reviews of SDHC cards (not particularly this one) because people don't read their camera manuals and specs. Old camera models will not accept SDHC cards. So, I say read your camera specs first before investing on a SDHC card. Once you determine that your camera supports it, then this is the card to buy!!!

I have used and own Nikon and Canon DSLR cameras for the last 5 years, from Nikon D40, Nikon D70, Canon 40D, Canon 50D and finally bought myself a full frame camera from Canon 5D Mark II. I can't be happier.... I love how I could do micro adjustments on my lenses, and love it that it captures the HD videos. It has been my professional work camera for the last 6 months and I like the results. It really stands up with the 24-105 lens and 80 f1.5 for portrait. I have the 70-200 F4 L IS with it, but I like it better with 24-105 and 80 1.5

This camera has been a blessing. I just wished Canon has the on/off switches near the click button... just like Nikon. Other than that, I love this camera!

I purchased this camera to use whenever I didn't need my 1D (too heavy to carry around Disneyland). It's been just about a year and so far, I absolutely love it and gave it a 5 star rating and here are the reason why:



Ease of use: coming from other Canon bodies, the controls and function of the camera was a breeze. Infact, some new items in the menu, such as My Menu, allows you to add your most used functions and is very easily accessed. I've heard Nikon users complaining that Canon controls are difficult and not layout well. Newsflash: Canon is a completely different system and therefore, is going to be different. I can control my Canon by touch in total darkness, but put a Nikon in my hands, I'm lost.



Image/Picture Quality: it's a Canon with a full size sensor. They are the pioneers and leaders in CMOS sensors for DSLRs and their dedication shows. I have no probem shooting ISO1600 and often shoot ISO6400 without much thought. I shoot mostly L series lens and the colors recorded is simply amazing. Not over saturated like the other brand cameras, just really natural colors. Beautiful for shooting people, as well as nature.



Video Quality: at first I was very hesitant to accept the fact that my DSLR has a built-in video camera. Once I got used to the idea of having a video camera and once I started tinkering with it, I was amazed. Full HD video shot between stills, then all combined into a slideshow is just awesome! The actual video quality is breathtaking. Just like anything else full HD, the clarity seems too good to be true. Sound is OK, but if I were to do more video capture with my camera, I would definitely purchase an external mic. If shooting video is your thing, there is NO better video camera out there. You can spend $10K on a video camera, but bottom line is, the quality isn't going to be as good as the Canon 5DMKII due to the size of the image sensor. As far as I know, there are no video cameras with an image sensor that's comparable to the Canon 5DMKII. What's more, you can use any of the Canon lens to shoot video with.



Weather Sealing: there seem to be a lot of people out there concerned about the quality of Canon's weather sealing. My experience with the weather seals have all been positive. I've been in sand storms (desert), full down pour raining (Alaska, Hawaii, etc), and even extreme dust (popcorn ceiling scraped, walls torn down, drywall dust everywhere) and so far, NOTHING, NO DUST inside the camera! That's amazing! I'd say the camera is pretty well sealed against the environment.



Durability: Don't let the lightweight magnesium alloy body fool you. Just because it's light doesn't mean it's weak. It just means it's easier to carry and handle all day long. I was walking and shooting a subject one day and tripped on a curb. I fell over and managed to not land on the camera, but the camera's body did strike the side of the curb. Yes, it left a gash mark down to bare metal, but the camera is still totally fine.



BOTTOM LINE: great tool. Best camera I've ever used.

I will only write a short review about this camera because others have already written very extensive reviews about it. For an even more comprehensive one, I would refer you to the website DPReview.



After thinking about this camera for 6 months, I finally convinced myself to buy it. I am not regretting the decision at all. This is an excellent camera for my needs and the picture quality and resolution from its 21 megapixel sensor is simply mind boggling. In my mind, the main advantage of all those megapixels is the ability to do an extensive crop without sacrificing the image quality. I owned a 30D and if I crop files from it just a little bit, the sharpness suffers.



Let me now talk about the high ISO performance of the 5D Mark II. It is definitely amazing. Different people have different tolerances as far as image noise but for me it is excellent up to ISO 1600. I went to an indoor place with Christmas lights display and shot ISO 3200 and I was still happy with the results. I did have to clean up half of the files with the Noise Ninja software. But guess what, the files clean up very easily with the noise reduction software. Images from my 30D did not clean up as easily.



The only reason why I did not give this camera 5 stars is because of its autofocus (AF) system. Now, I mainly shoot portraits and nature. I don't do much sports. And for subjects that are father away, I mainly use the center AF which is extremely adequate. However, when I shoot portraits at closer distances and shallow apertures, I like using specific AF points (to avoid blur). In these instances, I can't help but feel that there should be more focus points.



How about using the camera for moving subjects? I don't think it was designed to be a sports camera. It can take 4 frames per second which I don't think is very adequate. Although I've seen pictures from very talented photographers from DPReview take amazing pictures of birds in flight with this camera so it can be done. (Google "liquidstone pbase" and you will be amazed.)



While I love this camera and will use it for many years, I advice you to also read about the alternatives. I will list them below.



If you are a Canon user and have Canon lenses, another alternative is the 7D. The 7D is not a full frame camera but an APS-C (cropped sensor) camera. The 7D is superior to the 5D in terms of its autofocus system (faster frame rate, more sensitive AF points, and more AF points) and features (better LCD, bigger viewfinder, electronic grid, customizable buttons) but inferior to the 5D in terms of image quality and ISO performance.



If you are starting from scratch or if you are willing to switch, you also should consider the Nikon D700. As far as image quality and high ISO performance, I think both cameras are at par. Canon is superior in terms of having a higher resolution (21 vs 12 megapixels) and 1080p video. But Nikon is superior in terms of build quality, weather sealing, and autofocus system. The D700's autofocus system is really more advanced than the 5D2's. It has 51 AF points (15 of which are the more sensitive cross-type kind) and a frame rate of 5 FPS without the battery grip and 8 FPS with the grip.



So which should you buy, the D700 or the 5D Mark II? If you will use the camera mainly for sports, then you should definitely go for the D700. Otherwise, it's a matter of preference. If you prefer a higher resolution camera with 1080p video, go for the 5D Mark II. If you prefer a more robust camera with excellent weather sealing and a pro-autofocus, then go for the D700.

 "You will never want to put this camera down!" 2010-01-01

I shot 35mm film ages ago, but stopped when the cost of purchasing film and processing fees became prohibitive. I have been a photographer in one form or another for nearly 20 years. I decided that I definitely wanted to go digital, but was not happy with any of the cropped sensor bodies available at the time (early 2000's). When the 1Ds and 5D models first became available, I drooled, but couldn't justify the amount of money. So I waited. Along came the 5D Mark II (or as we say in the software industry, version 2.0) The price was lower than the original 5D and the quality and speed were even better then the now-three year old model. I saved my pennies and nickels for a while and finally purchased one!



From the moment I picked up the demonstrator model in the store, I knew this was the camera for me. Well balanced, large view-finder, and *gasp* video! I'm not much of a videographer, but seriously, taking HD clips with a prime lens on a full-frame sensor is just insane!



Pros:

- Low-light performance has to be seen to be believed. I'm sure you have heard the hype, but it's not hype. You really can take reasonable pictures in much darker rooms than you ever thought possible.

- Well balanced in your hands

- Simple menu system that does not require an engineering degree to use.

- Image quality (IQ) that simply blows away everything else in its class.

- Price is actually reasonable for what you get; hundreds less than the competition.

- Video!



Cons:

- The IQ is _too_ good. You can actually tell the difference between pictures taken with "L" glass and those that were not.

- Frame rate isn't great for sports. If this is your intended use, look at the 7D or 1D.

- Video limited in odd ways. Then again, this is a DSLR, not a camcorder.



In spite of what I just said about taking pictures with "L" glass, this camera is perfectly serviceable with regular lenses. Just realize that they are "consumer" grade and will have issues when shot wide open or when at the minimum or maximum of the zoom range. That said, the "nifty fifty" (50mm f/1.8) that sells for around $100 takes astonishingly good pictures.



If you're just starting out, the lenses that I would recommend buying with this body are:



17-40mm f/4 L - Eye-popping landscapes. The 16-35mm f/2.8 L is a stop faster, but neither lens will see much indoor use as you would have to be mere inches away from your subject to fill the frame. The extra stop also doubles the price with little benefit in the scenarios that it is likely to be used. At 2.8 the faster lens is quite soft, and the image quality in general is not quite as good. Save your money and get the 17-40. You won't be sorry!



24-70mm f/2.8 L - Fantastic walk-around lens. The 24-105mm f/4 that comes in the 5DMkII kit has more reach and is image stabilized, but I still prefer the speed of the 24-70. You can do more with it in lower light sitations.



70-200mm f/2.8 L - The IS version of this lens is silly expensive, but the standard version shares the same glass with its brother. For portraits and weddings, you cannot have a finer lens. The f/4 cousins are smaller and lighter. If you plan to shoot outdoors most of the time where there is sufficient light, then you should be fine with it. Indoors you will find yourself using a flash more often, even with the IS version of the f/4. The bokeh from the f/2.8 is noticeably better too.



50mm f/1.8 or f/1.4 - The "L" version of this lens is f/1.2 and about $1k more. It's soft at f/1.2 and shoots its best at f/1.4 and higher. The "L" glass _is_ better than its cheaper cousins, but is it really worth it? This is one of the rare cases where there is little need to buy the "L" version. Buy the f/1.4 for $350 or the f/1.8 for $100 and enjoy it.

I have been looking for a bigger size digital photo frame and thought this would be perfect - I had a couple of issues with mine and have had to return it - although to be fair, it could have been simply one dodgy frame.....However, be warned that the wood frame is a deep red color rather than the "warm brown" that I was expecting. I'm not sure why this is the only color option?? I didn't have any setup issues at all - was straightforward and simple to download the photos. The images were not bad once on screen. The issues that I had were that the slideshow would just randomly freeze and I would have to reset it. The other issue was that sometimes photos wouldn't completely load during the slideshow (it would be different photos each rotation)- very frustrating, to say the least. Another thing to note is that you can't skip through photos or return back to a photo if you wanted to for any reason. Would be a nice option. I have to say though that there really aren't many options for the bigger size photo frames and this one is a great price if it would have worked!

Okay the disappointment started right when the package arrived. Manufacturer's box was placed into a very loose cardboard box with way too little insulating air packets in between. The manufacturer's box itself looked like it was stored on the shelf for years and constantly moved back and forth - all scratched and worn out. Inside the box it did not look any better. The frame was fixed in by the styrofoam holders but the plastic sleeve was not on, just laying separately in the box. The wooden frame was scratched in several places, so I even started thinking of returning that thing back to Amazon.



Plastic attachment with the pocket for the remote and a groove for the plastic stand, as well as the stand itself, were made from cheap plastic and did not look solid, so I was not surprised to discover that the stand, which is supposed to fix the frame in 3 or 4 different positions (so that you could control the angle when you use the stand to put the frame on a horisontal surface such as table) actually holds only in one position. If you try to use any other position, weak plastic "button" that is supposed to fix the position, is self pressed by the weight of the frame, and the stand skids further to the next position, then again to the next... until it stops in the farthest one. Totally useless design.



Now more important things. Picture quality of this frame is sheerly disappointing to say the least. I knew the resolution would be only 1024x768 (hey, I am using 1600x960 on my 15" laptop, so what's the problem to make at least 1280x1024 frame?). However, the reflection glare and very poor viewing angles add to the negative impression. When you look at the frame at any angle higher than 30-40 degrees, you start seeing negative colors and other color distortions, especially noticeable on the dark photos. You need to ensure that your line of sight is strictly orthogonal to the plane of the frame, if you want to see the picture not distorted.



So that I am not entirely negative... On the bright side, there were absolutely no problems connecting the frame to the PC (using mini USB jack on the side of the frame) and uploading the photos. The frame also has media card slots for various media formats, and you can even attach the flash drive to the provided USB slot to get yet more space for the photos.



Overall, this seems to be my worst purchase that I had ever made with Amazon. I wished I never had the idea of buying the picture frame coming to my mind...

This is my second high resolution digital picture frame (DPF). The first, a Pandigital unit is quite a bit smaller, but the exact same resolution at 1024 x 768. I was actually looking for something more along the size of the Pandigital one, but was unable to find one on Amazon that provided this resolution with reasonable reviews at that size and reasonable price. So I bought this one.



The picture is quite good, better than the Pandigital in that the backlight and contrast provides enough range to get adjusted to where whites are white, blacks are black, and midtones are more or less correct - the rest I can do in the computer prior to uploading. I appreciate the range of update times extending up into the minutes. All in all, there is nothing to complain about apart from one major (for me) issue.



I've got lots and lots of images that I like to display on the DPF. I like to upload several to many images from a given event, trip, or subject and then have the frame display the images at random. A random order displaying slideshow would seem to be just about the most basic option one could have in one of these items and yet, somehow, inexplicably, this feature is not provided. Yes, supposedly I could show movies (with sound!) on the picture frame, but simply providing a random order display sequence somehow didn't make it to the feature list. Amazing.



I almost returned the unit the day I got it after discovering this frustrating deficiency, but have decided to keep it...and write a review to let others know. If you want a frame that have this basic feature you will have to go elsewhere. Other than that, it seems to be great.



Oh, and unlike Pandigital who somehow figured out how to have the remote work without having a rather ugly black dot in the middle of the mat, this unit's make didn't. Shame really - really trivial things that prevent me to recommend this frame without reservation.

This was an excellent gift for a couple that have thousands of pictures from their adventures and family. I had to open and load the few pictures I had of interest for them and the only draw back I saw was that the digital frame did not show me the pictures I was downloading until the unit was disconnected from my computer. It would have been handy to discover that 1 of my downloads did not make it. Frame almost matched their furniture decor perfectly and they immediately saw an advantage of loading all the different pictures they already had framed, into the digital monitor, freeing up plenty of shelf space to make room for display.

Extended warranties are great products-- for the companies providing the warranties, but not for you.



Put simply, companies do not deliberately go into business to pay more than they collect ;-)



The warranty providers know pretty well how much they will pay to cover damage/replacement on all their policies aggregated together. They add a substantial profit margin and divide by the number of policies to get the price they charge you.



Their business model is like a casino running a clean game-- the bet is still a bad deal for you even when the company is smart enough to pay you promptly with a smile (just as it's shortsighted for a big casino to cheat).



In short, the expected return on your investment on an extended warranty is almost always negative. You can only expect to win if you know you are a harsh user who is -much- more likely to break your item. Even then, it only works if enough other ordinary users continue to buy the warranties.

This argument does not imply that you should never buy insurance. If you lose your home, for example, the actual cost impact you feel is likely to be much larger than the dollar cost of rebuilding it because you will not be able to raise the money on your own after a disaster. This allows the insurance company to take in more than it pays out, making a profit, while still providing you a useful service.



It works because the premium you pay is less than your expected cost of a disaster, even though the premium will be more than your expected dollar receipts from claims.



A good touchstone is that you should not choose to insure unless a worst-case loss would be financially crippling.

My son purchased a used X-Box 1 year ago on E-Bay. We bought a used item solely b/c Square Trade offered a great warranty on the item. Almost 1 year later the unit broke, and Square Trade refunded our purchase price. My son went the same route, went to E-Bay, purchased another refurbished unit that offered a Square Trade warranty. The day I paid, Square Trade sent an e-mail with their warranty offer in it including my "return customer" discount. I had a question about the offer, so I e-mailed customer service and got an instant reply: "We are sorry you received the e-mail offer, we no longer cover E-Bay sold X-Box units, but we offer service from these other websites...." In my opinion, they made the offer, they should back it up. If I had not made an inquiry and just the purchase, what would have happened, they would have taken my money and not serviced my product???? Poor customer service, false advertisement, back your word....

For me, the real selling points of this camera were: its size, its outstanding zoom range, and the fact that it is a Nikon. The camera is an ideal size, and conforms well to the hands when shooting. The user interface is not entirely intuitive, but if you spend a little time with the camera, it is not very difficult to figure out. The zoom range is fantastic. But the motor used to control the zoom won't let you continuously zoom in and out; it is set to allow you to only zoom to a certain number of discrete positions. I found this to be really annoying--frequently, I wanted to zoom in or out just a tiny bit, but the darn thing would jump to its next zoom zone, which would be way off-the-mark.



If you are looking for a point-and-shoot camera that works very well in fully auto mode, then this is NOT the camera for you. Virtually all of the fully-automatic shots I took with this camera, particularly indoors, came out poorly exposed--typically out-of-focus, blurred, with inaccurate color rendering, or with noticeable digital noise. I found that if I took the time to go to the menu and select the proper shooting mode (for example, "Indoor Portrait," "Still Life," etc) to conform to the shooting environment at the time, the results were much better, though still frequently flawed. If you are buying a point-and-shoot camera in order to actually point-and-shoot, I would argue that users generally don't expect to have to reset modes for every situation in order to get a decent shot. (I own a 6 year old Kodak 3.1MP camera that, hands down, takes way better point-and-shoot auto-exposed photos than the Nikon S630. Unfortunately, the Kodak is fairly bulky and its viewing LCD, by today's standards especially, is very tiny--which is why am I looking to supplement it with a newer camera.)



It turns out that a cousin of mine bought the same camera at about the same time, and she experienced similar results, and returned the camera. I am going to do the same thing. For me, it was unfortunately not the right choice.

I purchased this camera a year ago. I really liked it until the lens stopped working. I called Nikon and my extended warranty expired less than a month ago. They were not able to help. They said they could repair it for $100 plus shipping to and from. Since I purchased it on sale for $150 I didn't think that the $100 repair was worth it. So now I have a camera I can't use at all. I am planning on giving it to my toddler as a toy because that's all it's good for now! I would expect a product from Nikon to last more than a year. Very disappointed and I don't think I will choose Nikon again.
